Making positive choices

It’s a concept that has been pretty uncritically celebrated for the last 20 years in nearly all aspects of our increasingly consumerised lives and that is unlikely to change under the present government, with its enthusiasm for choice in things like education and health particularly. Website of the Week

Many sites and services claim to be ‘the future of social networking’, but only Sedogo has chosen to focus its entire community around attaining future goals. Sometimes achieving a lifetime ambition can prove difficult because the goal itself requires skills, funding or opportunities that take a lot of time to unlock — paragliding over the Himalayan peaks, for example. But sometimes it just comes down to personal inertia or a lack of commitment from a group of friends to actually get the thing done — say, saving that crumbling school or theatre. Sedogo allows you to create big or small goals, search for others with similar goals, invite people to share your goals, keep track of goals on a personal timeline, then share photos and videos of goals finally being conquered. The future of fundraising?

As the government releases its Giving Green Paper, which includes a number of ways in which technology can be used to increase giving, Shubhi Tandon throws a few more suggestions into the mix…

… the new social networking site Sedogo deserves a mention on this technology blog. This website lets people make a timeline of their goals in life – and connect with people with similar goals to complete.

While many goals sound like New Year’s Resolutions, the site does provide charities with the opportunity to connect with people interested in raising money or volunteering for their causes. Under the ‘charity’ section, for example, it lists people who want to “raise £100,000 for suicide research in two years” or “go skydiving for charity before their 19th birthday”. Best websites of 2010

Our favourites from Pocket-lint’s Website of the Day.

When we heard about www.sedogo.com, we were pleased to see such a bold statement: “Create your future and connect with others to make it happen”. Now let’s see what it means…Basically, you fill in your life goals, then see who wants to do the same things and hopefully get together to share the experience. A great idea, and as anybody who’s ever tried to organise a stag do will tell you, getting like minded people to agree on a “when” and a “where” is no mean feat. This should make organising and sharing your life adventures a breeze. It’s social networking for the adventurous of spirit. It’s brand new this one too, so well worth watching. Only 1-in-10 do the job they wanted as a child

Only one in ten Brits is currently in the career they dreamed of as a child,  it has been found.

More than nine out of ten admit they are ‘totally dissatisfied’ with their current job and would ‘quit tomorrow’ if they had the chance.

Nearly two-thirds still harbour ambitions of pursuing their childhood dreams, with the majority having done so for more than ten years.

But a lack of contacts, courage and confidence means less than a fifth of the UK workforce has taken active steps towards making a career change… More > Newslite.

The survey, which was conducted through the website, also found that rather than people not just being bothered there were a number of reasons why the resolutions were not being kept including:

  • Not enough time
  • Too many responsibilities
  • Don’t have the confidence to go for it
  • I don’t know where to start
  • Lack of energy
  • Keep putting it off
  • Need inspiration

In order to break the cycle of giving up before you start the website, which is all about sharing your online goals, has launched their new S Plan for users. The plan helps set realistic and achievable goals, make a deadline for when it will be achieved and share it with friends.

Guy Eaton, from Sedogo.com, commented on the results of the survey saying: “Whatever your New Year’s resolution, from losing a bit of weight, getting a new job to going on an adventure, most of them don’t make it past the end of Jan because life just gets in the way.”
